The best time to visit Cusco is the dry season, from April to October: sunny days, clear skies and trails in good condition for trekking. June, July and August are the busiest months; May, September and October offer good weather with somewhat fewer visitors. Cusco can be visited all year round.
We are a local tour operator in Cusco and we run tours every month of the year. In this guide we explain the two seasons, what each month is like, the best time for each type of trip, what to pack and how to acclimatize to the altitude, so you can plan your 2027 trip.
When is the best time to visit Cusco?
The short answer: from April to October, during the dry season. That is when it rains the least, the sky is usually clear and the mountain routes are at their best. But there are a few nuances worth knowing before you choose your dates:
- June to August is the high season. It is busier, and Machu Picchu tickets and Inca Trail permits sell out sooner. The nights are the coldest of the year.
- May, September and October are the sweet spot for many travelers: good weather and somewhat fewer people than in the middle of the Andean winter.
- November to March is the rainy season. Heavy rain falls in the afternoons, but the landscape is greener and there are fewer visitors. The Inca Trail closes for all of February, although Machu Picchu stays open.
There is no bad time to visit Cusco: what matters is choosing the month that fits what you want to do.
Dry season and rainy season in Cusco
Cusco sits at about 3,400 m (11,150 ft), so its climate is nothing like the Peruvian coast. Instead of four distinct seasons, there are two. Daytime highs stay around 19–22 °C (66–72 °F) all year, so days are mild in any month. What changes is the rain and the cold at night.
Dry season (April to October). Sunny days and deep blue skies are the norm. Once the sun goes down the temperature drops quickly, and nights are very cold. In June and July lows can fall below 0 °C (32 °F), with frost in the early morning. This is the best time for trekking, photography and high-mountain routes.
Rainy season (November to March). The rain is heavy and usually arrives in the afternoon. The countryside turns green, the hills change color and there are fewer tourists. Some mountain routes may be muddy or temporarily closed, so it pays to travel with an operator who knows the current trail conditions.
Between the two seasons there are transition months: March–April, when the rains are easing off, and October–November, when they start to return. The weather in these months is more changeable, so pack for both situations.

Best time to visit Cusco for your type of trip
The ideal dates depend on what you want to do. Here are our recommendations for the most popular trips from Cusco.
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu can be visited all year. In the dry season you have a better chance of clear skies, but also bigger crowds and tickets that sell out sooner. In the rainy season there may be more clouds and rain, but there are fewer visitors and the surroundings are lush and green. For the train, bus and hiking options, read our guide on how to get to Machu Picchu. If you are short on time, our Machu Picchu full-day tour leaves from and returns to Cusco on the same day.
Inca Trail
The Inca Trail closes for all of February, so that month is off the table. The best time to hike it is the dry season, from May to September, with April and October as good alternatives. Permits are limited and in high season they sell out months in advance. Find all the details in our Inca Trail to Machu Picchu guide or book the classic 4-day Inca Trail.
Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake
High-mountain hikes are best in the dry season. At Rainbow Mountain, clear skies make the colored stripes stand out, while in the rainy season the trail can be muddy or even snowy. At Humantay Lake, at about 4,200 m (13,780 ft), dry-season mornings are usually clear, though very cold. Both are day trips from Cusco: the Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain tour and the Humantay Lake tour.

Sacred Valley and Cusco city
The Sacred Valley and the city are enjoyable in any month. In the rainy season the terraces and fields are greener, and since the rain tends to come in the afternoon, mornings are free for sightseeing. Take a look at our Sacred Valley VIP tour and the Cusco city tour, and find more ideas in our list of things to do in Cusco.

Book with 40%: all our tours are booked by paying 40% online, and the balance is paid when you arrive in Peru. If you are traveling between June and August, book early: in high season Machu Picchu tickets and Inca Trail permits sell out sooner.
Cusco festivals: when to go to experience them
If you want your trip to coincide with a celebration, festivals can also set your dates. The best known is Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun, held every June 24 with a large reenactment at Sacsayhuamán. The city fills up around those days, so book your accommodation and tours well in advance.
Other major festivals, such as Corpus Christi and the Qoyllur Rit’i pilgrimage, have movable dates that change every year. Throughout the year there are also patron saint festivals in the villages, with dancing, music and colorful costumes. See the full calendar in our post on Cusco festivals.

What to wear in Cusco by season
In Cusco you can feel warm at midday and very cold a few hours later. The key is dressing in layers, whatever the month.
In the dry season (April to October):
- A warm or down jacket for the nights and early mornings, especially in June and July.
- A hat, gloves and a thermal layer if you are heading out early to the mountains.
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a sun hat: at this altitude the sun is intense, even when it feels cold.
In the rainy season (November to March):
- A waterproof jacket or rain poncho, always in your daypack.
- Waterproof hiking shoes with a good grip for the mud.
- Quick-dry clothing and a spare change of clothes for long excursions.

Acclimatizing to the altitude in Cusco
Whatever the season, the altitude stays the same. At about 3,400 m (11,150 ft), it is normal to feel short of breath, have a headache or feel tired during the first days. That is why we recommend:
- Taking it easy on your first day: walk slowly, eat light and drink plenty of water.
- Spending 2 or 3 days in Cusco before any high-mountain hike, such as Humantay or Rainbow Mountain.
- Considering starting in the Sacred Valley, which is lower than Cusco, and moving up to the city afterwards.
To understand why altitude affects you and how to prevent the symptoms, read our guides on Cusco’s altitude and on how to prevent altitude sickness in Peru.
