Palcoyo (also written Palccoyo) is the gentle alternative to Rainbow Mountain: a short walk, several colored mountains in one view and far fewer people on the trail. We travel in groups of 8 to 12 people, and your guide carries oxygen and a first-aid kit in case the altitude affects anyone in the group.

Where is Palcoyo?

Palcoyo is in the district of Checacupe, province of Canchis, in the Cusco region of Peru. The drive takes about 2 hours on a paved road to Checacupe, then 30 minutes to 1 hour on a dirt road up to the community of Palccoyo: roughly 3 hours in total. That is why the tour starts before dawn. Our Palcoyo travel guide explains the area in more detail.

Palcoyo elevation

The highest point of the day is about 4,900 m (16,080 ft) above sea level, far higher than Cusco itself (around 3,400 m / 11,150 ft). Even though the walk is short, you will notice the thin air with every step. Spend at least 1 or 2 days in Cusco before the tour so your body has time to adjust.

Is the Palcoyo hike difficult?

It is rated easy. The path to the viewpoint is gentle and takes 45 minutes to 1 hour, so it suits travelers who want to see a rainbow mountain without a long climb. The stone forest is optional: a short but steep climb among rock formations. The real challenge is the altitude, so walk slowly, drink water and use the trekking poles we provide.

Best time to visit Palcoyo

The dry season, from April to October, usually brings clearer skies and brighter colors. From November to March it rains more often and clouds can hide part of the view. Mornings are cold all year round at this altitude: bring layers, a hat, gloves and sunscreen for the strong Andean sun.

Palcoyo or Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)?

The Rainbow Mountain tour to Vinicunca is the classic one, with a 1.5 to 2-hour climb to about 5,200 m (17,060 ft). Palcoyo is lower, the walk is much shorter and there are fewer visitors, yet you still see several colored mountains at once. Both cost US$50 per person. Choose Palcoyo for an easier day; choose Vinicunca for the famous view and a bigger hike.
