Pallay Punchu means “the poncho with designs” in Quechua, a name that suits its sharp, colored rocky ridges. It gets few visitors, so the trail is quiet. We travel in groups of 8 to 12 people, and your guide carries oxygen and a first-aid kit in case the altitude affects anyone in the group.

Where is Pallay Punchu?

Pallay Punchu is in the district of Layo, province of Canas, in the Cusco region, near the Langui Layo lagoon. The drive to Layo takes about 3 hours (3.5 to 4 hours with stops), plus another 15 minutes to the start of the trail, so it is a long day that begins before dawn. Our Pallay Punchu travel guide tells you more about the area.

Pallay Punchu elevation

The highest point of the hike is about 4,800 m (15,750 ft) above sea level, far higher than Cusco itself (around 3,400 m / 11,150 ft). At that altitude the steep final stretch feels much harder than it looks. Spend at least 1 or 2 days in Cusco before the tour so your body has time to adjust.

Is the Pallay Punchu hike difficult?

It is rated moderate. The climb takes 1 to 2 hours and gets steep at the end, on loose ground where you need to watch your footing. The descent takes about 1 hour. The trekking poles we provide help a lot on both. The ridges are often windy, so keep a jacket at hand. You do not need technical experience, but you should be acclimatized and reasonably fit.

Best time to visit Pallay Punchu

The dry season, from April to October, usually brings clearer skies and the best light on the ridges. From November to March it rains more often and clouds can hide the view. Mornings are cold all year round at this altitude: bring layers, a hat, gloves and sunscreen for the strong Andean sun.

Pallay Punchu or Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)?

The Rainbow Mountain tour to Vinicunca is the classic one, with a 1.5 to 2-hour climb to about 5,200 m (17,060 ft) and many more visitors. Pallay Punchu is lower, but the drive is longer and the last part of the climb is steeper. In return you get sharp ridges and quiet trails. Choose Pallay Punchu if you have already seen Vinicunca or want a less crowded colored mountain.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is the elevation of Pallay Punchu?

The highest point of the hike is about 4,800 m (15,750 ft) above sea level, much higher than Cusco (around 3,400 m).

2. Is the Pallay Punchu hike difficult?

It is moderate: 1 to 2 hours uphill, steep at the end and on loose ground, and about 1 hour back down. It is not technical, but the altitude and the final slope make it demanding.

3. Do I need to acclimatize before the tour?

Yes. Spend at least 1 or 2 days in Cusco before the tour, drink water and avoid heavy meals and alcohol the night before. A well-acclimatized body handles the steep final stretch much better.

4. What is the best time to visit Pallay Punchu?

The dry season, from April to October, when skies are usually clearer. From November to March it rains more often and clouds can cover the ridges.

5. What should I bring?

Warm layers, a windproof jacket for the ridges, a hat, gloves, a rain poncho, sunscreen, sunglasses, water, snacks, hiking boots with good grip and cash in soles for personal expenses.

6. How does booking with 40% work?

You pay 40% of the price online (US$24 per person) to secure your spot, and the remaining 60% (US$36) when you arrive in Peru.

7. Which is better: Pallay Punchu or Vinicunca?

Vinicunca has the most famous view and reaches about 5,200 m. Pallay Punchu is lower and has far fewer visitors, but the drive is longer and the end of the climb is steeper. If you have already seen Vinicunca or prefer quiet trails, choose Pallay Punchu.

8. Can children or older adults do the tour?

This is a long day with a steep final climb on loose ground at high altitude, so we only recommend it for people who are acclimatized, in good health and used to walking. If you are traveling with children or older adults, tell us their ages when you book so we can advise you; for an easier option, consider Palcoyo. Anyone with heart or breathing problems should check with a doctor first.
