Mancora Peru 2027: Best Beaches, Punta Sal and Things to Do

Golden sunset over a rocky beach with gentle waves

Mancora, Peru is a beach town on the country’s north coast, in the Piura region. It is known for surfing, sunshine almost all year round, ceviche and a laid-back atmosphere. Nearby are Vichayito, Los Órganos and, farther north, Punta Sal, with calm waters. It is the perfect place to rest after the Andes.

We are local guides based in Cusco, and we also run a 2-day tour to Mancora and Punta Sal. In this guide we explain where Mancora is, how to get there, which beaches to visit, what to do and how to combine the beach with Machu Picchu.

Where Is Mancora, Peru?

Mancora is a seaside resort town on Peru’s north coast, in the Piura region, close to the border with the Tumbes region. It sits at sea level and is famous for its sunshine almost all year, its surf waves and its relaxed atmosphere.

Around it there are other beaches worth visiting. To the south are Vichayito and Los Órganos, both quieter. To the north, already in the Tumbes region, is Punta Sal, with calm, clear water. So when we talk about the Mancora beaches, we really mean a stretch of coast with options for every traveler: waves, relaxation or calm water for swimming.

How to Get to Mancora from Lima and Cusco

Mancora is far from both Lima and Cusco, so it pays to plan the trip ahead. These are the usual ways to get there:

  • By plane from Lima: there are flights from Lima to Tumbes. From Tumbes to Mancora it is about 2 hours by road.
  • By bus from Lima: there are buses to Mancora, but it is a very long journey. We only recommend it if you have plenty of time.
  • From Cusco: there is no direct connection. You have to go through Lima and continue from there by plane to Tumbes or by bus to Mancora.

Our Mancora and Punta Sal beaches tour starts in Tumbes: you get there on your own, and from there we take you on a private transfer to Mancora, which takes about 2 hours. Write to us before buying your tickets so we can coordinate your arrival time.

The Best Beaches in Mancora and Northern Peru

These are the four beaches we recommend in the area. Each one has its own character:

Mancora

This is the main beach and the busiest town in the area, with beachfront restaurants and a lively atmosphere. The sea here has waves, which is why it is the meeting point for surfers and for people who want to learn. It is the most practical base for staying overnight and visiting the other beaches.

Punta Sal

Punta Sal lies north of Mancora, already in the Tumbes region. Its water is calm and clear, good for swimming and snorkeling. It is the ideal beach if you are looking for rest and a gentle sea. On our tour, we spend the morning of the second day in Punta Sal.

Vichayito

Very close to Mancora, to the south, Vichayito is a quieter beach with less going on. It is a good choice if you prefer to get away from the noise of town without being far from its restaurants and activities.

Los Órganos

Also south of Mancora, Los Órganos is a quieter coastal town. Nearby is the El Ñuro pier, where it is common to see sea turtles.

Safety in the sea: before swimming, check the sea conditions and follow local advice. Mancora has surf waves, so it is best to swim in the designated areas. Punta Sal is calmer and usually better for people who are not confident swimmers.

Things to Do in Mancora: Surfing, Turtles, Whales and Ceviche

Mancora is above all a place to relax, but there are activities for every taste. The ones below are not included in our tour: you book and pay for them separately in the area.

Surfing and Kitesurfing

Mancora is famous for its left-hand wave and is a good place to start: there are schools with beginner lessons and equipment rental. Kitesurfing is also practiced here. If it is your first time, take a lesson before heading out on your own.

Sea Turtles at El Ñuro

At the El Ñuro pier, near Los Órganos, it is common to see sea turtles. It is a local attraction you can visit on your own, but it is not part of our tour. Watch them respectfully, without touching or feeding them.

Whale Watching

In the second half of the year, roughly from July to October, humpback whales pass along Peru’s north coast. During this season there are boat trips to see them, which are booked separately and are not included in our tour. Keep in mind that no one can guarantee sightings.

North Coast Food

The north is the land of ceviche, seafood and fresh fish. On our tour, lunches and dinners are at local restaurants, with typical regional dishes. If you are coming from Cusco, you will notice the contrast with highland cooking, which we describe in our guide to Andean food.

Best Time to Visit Mancora, Peru

Mancora has a warm, sunny climate most of the year, and its sea is warmer than on the central coast, where Lima is. Even so, each season has something different to offer:

SeasonWeatherWhat to expect
December to March (summer)The hottest and sunniest time of yearThe best sea for swimming and water sports. It is high season: there are more people and it is wise to book early.
April to NovemberWarm and sunny, with some cloudy morningsA quieter atmosphere, ideal for relaxing without the crowds.
July to October (approx.)Same as the rest of the year outside summerHumpback whale season off the coast, with boat trips booked separately.

If the sea is your priority, come in summer and book ahead. If you prefer peace and quiet, the rest of the year is sunny too. Keep in mind that December to March is the rainy season in Cusco and Machu Picchu: if you are combining both destinations, leave some flexibility in your plans.

How Many Days in Mancora and How to Combine It with Cusco

Our tour lasts 2 days and 1 night, and that is the minimum we recommend: the journey north is long, and it is worth having at least one full beach day. If you have more time, you can stay a few extra days in Mancora on your own.

Mancora fits perfectly at the end of a trip through the Andes. After the altitude of Cusco and Machu Picchu, coming down to sea level is the best way to unwind. Here is a sample itinerary you can adapt to your dates:
