We visit the circular Inca terraces of Moray and the Maras salt ponds, crossing the Chinchero plateau on the way, with views of the snow peaks. We travel in groups of 8 to 15 people, with a guide in Spanish, English or Portuguese. It is an easy, short tour, ideal for making the most of a free morning or afternoon in Cusco.
Where are Maras and Moray, and how do you get there from Cusco?
Moray and the Maras salt ponds are in the Cusco region, near the Sacred Valley of the Incas. From Cusco we drive across the Chinchero plateau, and the whole tour, including transport, takes about 5 hours. To learn more about the area, read our Sacred Valley of the Incas guide.
What is Moray?
Moray is a group of circular Inca terraces, believed to have been a center for agricultural experimentation. Your guide tells you about its history and how it is thought to have worked. To enter you need the Cusco Tourist Ticket (Boleto Turístico del Cusco), which is not included in the tour price.
What are the Maras salt mines?
They are thousands of salt ponds on a hillside, worked by local families since before the Incas. The entrance fee to the salt ponds is paid on site, in soles. In the rainy season, from December to March, the visit to the salt ponds may change because of the weather. If the salt ponds close, we will let you know in advance.
