Our Arequipa city tour covers the essentials of the White City in one day: the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral, Santa Catalina Monastery, the Santuarios Andinos Museum, home of the Juanita mummy, and the Yanahuara Viewpoint. It runs from about 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and starts in central Arequipa, from US$60 per person. A guide in English, Spanish or Portuguese and entrance fees are included, except the Santa Catalina Monastery entrance, which you pay separately at the door, in soles.
Where is Arequipa and why is it called the White City?
Arequipa lies in southern Peru, at the foot of El Misti volcano. The Spanish founded it in 1540, and its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The nickname comes from sillar, a pale volcanic stone that is easy to carve and was used for churches, mansions and doorways. Our guides explain how European techniques and local craftsmanship came together in this architecture.
Arequipa altitude: will it affect you?
The city sits at about 2,335 m (7,660 ft), much lower than Cusco (around 3,400 m / 11,150 ft) or Puno (over 3,800 m / 12,500 ft). Most travelers feel fine from the first day, though we still recommend taking it easy, drinking water and avoiding heavy meals. That makes Arequipa a good starting point for a southern Peru route before heading higher.
What does the Arequipa city tour route look like?
It combines walking through the historic center with tourist transport between the more distant stops. Here is the order of visits; full details are in the itinerary tab.
| Stop | Place | What you will see |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Plaza de Armas | The heart of the city, framed by colonial sillar buildings |
| 2 | Arequipa Cathedral | One of the city’s landmarks and its history |
| 3 | Santa Catalina Monastery | Colorful streets and plazas where cloistered nuns lived for centuries |
| 4 | Santuarios Andinos Museum | The Juanita mummy, an Inca offering found on Ampato volcano |
| 5 | Yanahuara Viewpoint | Sillar arches and a view of the city with El Misti behind it |
Santa Catalina, founded in the 16th century, works like a small city inside Arequipa and is usually the stop that takes longest. At Santuarios Andinos your guide explains the Inca high-mountain rituals.
Difficulty: who is this tour for?
Difficulty is low. The walking is at an easy pace, sometimes on cobblestones, and the tour suits all ages, including children with an adult. Some areas of Santa Catalina are not fully accessible for travelers with reduced mobility; if that applies to you, let us know when you book.
What to bring: comfortable shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, water, a camera and some cash. Meals and the Santa Catalina Monastery entrance (paid in soles at the door) are not included.
Best time for an Arequipa city tour
The tour runs all year, as Arequipa is dry and sunny most of the time. From April to November skies tend to be clearer for seeing the volcanoes from Yanahuara; from December to March there can be some rain. The sun is strong in every month.
City tour or Colca Canyon: which first?
They complement each other. The city tour is relaxed and stays at the city’s altitude, while the Colca Canyon tour leaves before dawn and climbs much higher. We recommend doing the city tour first, which helps you acclimatize, and leaving Colca for the next day.

14. Why is Arequipa called the "White City", and will I learn about it on the tour?
Yes. During your Arequipa city tour, you will discover why Arequipa is known as the "Ciudad Blanca" or "White City". The name comes from sillar, a pale volcanic stone widely used in its colonial buildings. This local stone gives the city its luminous look and architectural character. Learning about it is key to appreciating Arequipa's charm, just as understanding the stonework is essential on an adventure such as the Classic Inca Trail.
15. Is it possible to customize this Arequipa city tour for a private group?
This itinerary describes our standard shared Arequipa city tour, but we can often arrange private tours or adapt the tour to your group's interests, pace or schedule. For instance, you might want to spend more time at a particular site or add a place that is not on the standard itinerary. Please contact us with your requirements to discuss private options. We can also arrange private departures for many of our other adventures, including the demanding Choquequirao Trek.
16. What type of transportation is used during the tour?
For the parts of the Arequipa city tour that require travel between sites, such as the trip to the Yanahuara Viewpoint, we use comfortable tourist transportation. However, a large part of the tour, especially in the historic center, is done on foot, which lets you appreciate Arequipa's architecture and atmosphere up close.
17. Can I join the tour if I am staying in downtown Arequipa?
Yes. If you are staying in a hotel or other accommodation in downtown Arequipa (the historic center), we can usually arrange a pick-up from your location to join the Arequipa city tour. Alternatively, we can give you clear directions to a central meeting point. Please send us your accommodation details when you book so we can coordinate the logistics.
18. What makes the sillar architecture seen on the tour so unique?
Sillar is a defining feature of your Arequipa city tour. It is a white, porous volcanic rock that is relatively light and easy to carve, which allowed colonial artisans to create the elaborate mestizo Baroque details that decorate many of Arequipa's churches and mansions. Furthermore, its pearly white color gives the city its famous nickname, the "White City". If you appreciate unique stone construction, you might also enjoy the Inca techniques on display on our Short Inca Trail.
19. How far in advance should I book the Arequipa city tour?
We always do our best to accommodate last-minute requests for the Arequipa city tour, but we generally recommend booking at least a few days in advance, especially in the peak season, usually from May to October. Booking ahead secures your spot and lets us make all the arrangements. However, feel free to check availability with us, even at short notice.
20. What is the altitude of Arequipa?
Arequipa sits at about 2,335 m (7,660 ft), much lower than Cusco or Puno. Most travelers feel fine, but we recommend taking it easy on your first day and drinking plenty of water.
21. Can I combine the Arequipa city tour with Colca Canyon?
Yes, on separate days. We suggest doing the city tour first to acclimatize, since the Colca Canyon full-day tour leaves Arequipa at 3:30 a.m. and climbs much higher.
